Explorando la intersección de género.
Talleres Espacio Alternativo
EXHIBITION DATES 23rd November – 8th December 2018
REFLEJADX, was an opportunity for the artists to present their first large scale installation of the Reflected series in the format it had been intended. A total of five artworks were printed in 2 x 3 metre sheets of PVC vinyl mesh. The assembled images were suspended in layers from the ceiling allowing viewers to walk within the artworks. The exhibition was accompanied by workshops and artist talks, where they discussed the work on display, its relevance to Mexico, and to the local community in Oaxaca. As well as what it means to challenge masculine behaviour in a country where sexism and the patriarchy is so ingrained.
“For me it’s a beautiful work. It’s beautiful and relevant. In Mexico there is so much sexism, and also a lot of femicides. For many men there is pressure that exists from families not to challenge masculine behaviour. Even in very basic ways, like wearing something pink. Just by doing these little actions we are actually challenging strong patriarchal thinking. So when I look at artwork like this, and you are challenging this way of thinking in another way. It makes me think, maybe I could do something like this.”
